Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication

Overview

Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that corrects a weakened esophageal sphincter, which causes chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Hoag’s skilled physician team offers TIF as a treatment option for patients suffering from GERD symptoms.

The TIF procedure is performed entirely within the stomach under full visualization with an endoscope, and requires no incisions. During a procedure, a patient is placed under general anesthesia and an endoscope, a thin, flexible imaging device, is gently guided into the mouth, down through the esophagus, to the stomach. The device allows the physician to use preloaded, non-absorbable suture-like fasteners to reshape and reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter, and restore the body’s natural barrier to reflux.

The Benefits of TIF

  • Minimally invasive, without incisions
  • Quicker recovery (when compared to traditional nissen fundoplication)
  • No increased problems swallowing or burping
  • No Dysphasia
  • No gas bloat

Who Qualifies for TIF?

TIF is appropriate for individuals with GERD, who have tried yet found little to no reprieve or symptom relief from daily PPI’s/medications that have also been reported to cause long-tern health side effects, or who do not wish to be on long term PPI medications. It is also for individuals with long term complications due to their GERD like a pre-cancer condition called Barrett’s esophagus.

TIF is covered by some insurance carriers. Please check with your insurance plan to review coverage options.
