Gastric Emptying Test (GET)
Overview
A gastric emptying scan, also known as a gastric emptying study or test, uses nuclear medicine to determine how quickly food leaves the stomach. The scan involves using a small amount of radioactive material that emits photon energy, which is detected by a gamma camera, creating a computerized image.
Gastric emptying scans are often used to diagnose gastroparesis, a condition in which the stomach’s muscles do not function properly, delaying food from being transferred to the small intestine.
