Barium Swallow X-ray
Overview
A barium swallow is a radiographic X-ray examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract, specifically the pharynx and the esophagus. During the procedure, the pharynx and esophagus are made visible on X-ray film by a liquid suspension called barium sulfate. The barium highlights specific areas in the body to provide a clearer picture.
A barium swallow may be performed individually or as part of an upper gastrointestinal series evaluating the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
