Ulcerative Colitis

Overview

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-term inflammation and ulcers, or sores, in the digestive tract. It affects the innermost lining of the large intestine, or colon, and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time.

Ulcerative colitis can be debilitating and sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. Although there is no known cure, treatment can significantly reduce signs and symptoms of the disease and even bring about long-term remission.
