Hepatitis A
Overview
Caused by the hepatitis A virus, hepatitis A is a highly contagious infection of the liver. The virus is one of several types that cause inflammation and impact the liver’s ability to function.
Individuals are most likely to contract hepatitis A from contaminated food or water or from close contact with someone else who is infected. Mild cases do not require treatment, and most who are infected experience complete recovery completely without lasting liver damage.
Practicing good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, is one of the best ways to protect yourself against hepatitis A. Vaccines are available for those considered high risk.
