Centrally Mediated Abdominal Pain Syndrome (CAPS)

Overview

Centrally mediated abdominal pain syndrome (CAPS) is a functional GI disorder that produces no abnormal X-rays or laboratory findings. It is caused by altered sensitivity to nerve impulses in the brain and gut, and is not associated with altered motility in the intestines. CAPS is characterized by frequent or continuous abdominal pain that can be severe, and is rarely related to gut function such as eating or defecation.

The pain brought on by CAPS can be so all-consuming that it becomes the main focus of an individual’s life. It not only affects quality of life, but can also have a major economic impact.
